Compress an Image
Choose a picture and set the quality for a JPG copy. Processing stays in your browser; compare file size and detail before using the result.
How to use this tool
- Select an image your browser can read, up to 25MB.
- Set quality between 10 and 100; start at 80 and adjust as needed.
- Press Process image and download the result.
- Compare file size, small text and edges with the original.
Image compression versus resizing
The tool re-encodes the picture as JPG at your selected quality while retaining its pixel dimensions. Lower quality can reduce size but may introduce artifacts around detailed edges. The quality number is not a guaranteed percentage reduction or a target file size.
If an upload form requires a specific width in pixels, reducing quality is not enough. You need resizing for dimensions and compression for encoding quality.
Consider transparency before converting
The output is JPG even when the source is PNG or WebP. JPG cannot retain a transparent background, so this is not the right operation for preserving a transparent logo. Inspect the resulting background and keep the source when transparency matters.
An already compressed picture may not become smaller. Repeated JPG saves can lose detail, so start again from the original when trying another quality setting.
When this tool is useful
- Reduce the size of a photograph before sharing.
- Try a suitable quality setting for an upload form.
- Keep a lightweight JPG copy for viewing and the original for printing.
Privacy and data processing
The browser reads your file and creates the output locally, without uploading file contents to a conversion server. An internet connection may be needed to load the processing library the first time.
Save the result before leaving the page and keep the original for comparison. Downloaded copies remain on your device.
Frequently asked questions
Does a PNG stay in PNG format?
No. This compressor outputs JPG. Use another format tool when PNG or transparency is required.
Does 80% quality mean an 80% smaller file?
No. The setting controls JPEG encoding quality. Actual size depends on image content and dimensions.
Does this change the pixel dimensions?
No. Use Resize Image if you also need a smaller width.
Can I set an exact 100KB target?
There is no target-size control. Compare the downloaded result with the upload limit and adjust quality if appropriate.
What to do next
After preparing your pictures, combine them into a PDF when the recipient needs one document.
For a different web image format, try Image to WebP .
