Calculate a Percentage of a Number
Enter an amount and a percentage to find the portion. For example, 15% of 200 is 30. Enter the rate as 15, without a percent sign.
How to use this tool
- Enter the starting number in Value.
- Enter the percentage, such as 15 or 2.5, in Percentage %.
- Press Calculate to display that portion of the starting number.
The portion, not an adjusted total
The calculation divides the percentage by 100 and multiplies it by the amount. The result is the portion alone: it is not added to or subtracted from the original number. Use it for a known share or commission rate.
Decimal rates are supported. A percentage can also exceed 100 when that is what you intend; 150% of an amount means one and a half times that amount.
Different percentage questions need different inputs
Finding what percentage one number is of another is not the same as finding a known percentage of a number. This interface does not include a separate percentage-change or part-to-whole mode. Use it when you already know both the starting amount and the rate.
Worked example
15% of 200 is 30. A decimal rate works too: 2.5% of 80 is 2.
When this tool is useful
- Work out commission at a known rate.
- Find a stated share of a total.
- Check an exercise or everyday calculation.
Privacy and data processing
Your browser performs the calculation locally without sending the values to a processing server.
The result displays two decimal places, so small fractions may be rounded in the output.
Frequently asked questions
Should I enter 15 or 0.15 for fifteen percent?
Enter 15. The calculator divides the rate by 100 as part of the calculation.
Can I enter a decimal percentage?
Yes. For 2.5%, enter 2.5 in the rate field and your starting amount in Value.
Is the result the discounted price?
No. It is the percentage amount alone. Use Discount Calculator to subtract it from a price.
Can it calculate percentage change between two values?
There is no two-value comparison mode here. The current function finds a known percentage of one number.
